"Access for All in Aberdeen," a project sponsored by the Mayor's Advisory Committee for People with Disabilities, gives a window decal to businesses, schools and newly constructed buildings that are handicapped-accessible. This project is in conjunction with the committee's mission to have a "Barrier-Free Aberdeen by 2010." There are no areas in the Aberdeen Family Y that a handicapped person is unable to go. The parking lot has marked parking spaces, the doors are adapted to those in wheelchairs and even the pool has zero depth accessibility. Someone in a wheelchair can drive right in. There is a lift for people to lower themselves safely into the water. The old Y didn't have an elevator - this one does. Showers are wheelchair accessible with hand-held shower attachments.
Springdale Rotary Leads Efforts to Support Wheelchair Foundation
SPRINGDALE -- The three-minute video begins with scenes of children scooting down hallways on their bottoms, inching along on their elbows and crawling through sand.It goes on to show a grown man carried through the streets and an elderly woman isolated in her bed. All are Third World people who have lost the use of their legs.The first time he saw the video, Noel Morris leaned over to his wife and whispered, "Can I use your handkerchief?""I'm using it," Sandy Morris replied. The two were attending the 2002 Rotary International Convention in Barcelona, Spain. Noel Morris was incoming president of the Springdale Rotary Club.He'd had his agenda for the year mapped out, but seeing the Wheelchair Foundation video gave him a new focus. The goal of the foundation is to provide wheelchairs for the estimated 100 million people in developing countries who need them.Morris invited foundation spokesman Chris Lewis, son of entertainer Jerry Lewis, to visit the Springdale club.
Lung cancer rate high for female nonsmokers
Women who have never smoked account for more cases of lung cancer than previously thought, with rates comparable to cervical cancer, Stanford University researchers reported Thursday. About 20 percent of lung cancer cases in U.S. women and 8 percent of cases in men are among those who have never smoked, according to the study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Previously, oncologists had speculated that about 10 to 15 percent of lung cancer patients had never smoked. "I see lots of women in my practice in their 40s who have never smoked and have metastatic lung cancer," said Dr. Heather Wakelee, oncologist and assistant professor at Stanford University School of Medicine and lead author of the study. Using detailed patient databases in the United States and Sweden, the researchers looked at incidence of lung cancer in more than 1 million people ages 40 to 79.
