Visually handicapped association to raise funds through concert

SINGAPORE : The Singapore Association of The Visually Handicapped (SAVH) is holding a concert to raise funds. It hopes to get $120,000 in its first fundraising effort, since it got back its Institution of Public Character (IPC) status in October last year. The IPC status is needed to give the association the right to collect tax-exempt donations. Providing members with gainful employment requires training, and training is one area the association plans to spend its funds on. Other expenditures include staff payroll and providing facilities for the visually handicapped. Funding of some $1.5 million used to come from the National Council of Social Services but that ended in October 2005 when poor governance at the charity came to light. This came nine months after the association had its IPC status suspended.

97 points not good enough for VMI

Travis Holmes then made an amazing recovery and block from behind on Mack's layup attempt, but Coastal's Mario Sisinni was fouled in the scramble for the rebound. He made the first shot of a one-and-one with nine seconds left, and as he missed the second, teammate Joseph Harris swooped in for his 11th rebound.

"There was only one player on our team who could've got to that rebound and that was Harris," said Coastal coach Buzz Peterson, whose team has won six of seven.

Harris sank the first of two foul shots to push Coastal's advantage to two points, but then missed the second. Chavis Holmes, whose triple with 1:03 left had tied the score at 97, snagged the rebound and hustled to the other end for the last failed shot.

"We didn't start playing until there were about 12 minutes left," VMI coach Duggar Baucom said.

Drivers block hospital road

INCONSIDERATE parking that blocks bylances and wheelchairs could be put to an end if double yellow lines are granted on a town centre road.

Parry said drivers have been causing an obstruction for months when they park on Kelvedon Grove.

"They cause obstructions, park on the pavements and block access for wheelchairs," said the Fernleigh Court resident.

"They double park and the other week it took an ambulance 20 minutes to get to the nursing home."

He said around 10 or 12 cars park at the spot daily, he assumes is to escape parking charges in the town centre and hospital car parks.
