Feeding the Spirit Volunteers find joy in helping

There are no shortages of opportunities to serve your neighbor in the Archdiocese of Chicago. With hundreds of parishes and schools, organizations that serve the poor, immigrants, disabled people and others, those who want to put their resources to work need only look for an opportunity.

But where to start? Some easy places to look are the Web site of Young Adult Ministries of the Archdiocese of Chicago (www.yamchicago.org) and Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago, call (312) 655-7322, or visit www.catholiccharities.net and click on the tab labeled Get Involved).

Catholics also can ask their parishes or schools about volunter opportunities, or even just see a need and volunteer to fill it.

Professors raise special-ed awareness in Tanzania

The East African nation of Tanzania sits on the coastline bordering the Indian Ocean. Within this country of almost 38 million people there exist very few educational opportunities for the mentally handicapped, and even less training for those interested in working in special education.

That's about to change, though, thanks to a worldwide effort that has coordinated professionals in an impressive array of fields from a number of countries, including three professors from Pennsylvania State University's Great Valley campus.

Michelle MacLuckie is a congregant at New Hanover Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gilbertsville. Her pastor, the Rev. Susan Lynch, approached MacLuckie last year about working on a special project - a college, funded by an evangelical Lutheran diocese, under construction in Tanzania.

Fox to start business news TV channel

News Corp., owner of Fox News, will start a business news cable-television channel in the fourth quarter to compete with CNBC.

Roger Ailes, chairman and chief executive officer of Fox News, will develop and oversee Fox Business Channel, New York- based News Corp. said today in a statement.

News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch will challenge CNBC and Bloomberg Television, owned by Bloomberg LP, with the business channel, first announced in 2004. The new channel has 30 million subscribers signed up, News Corp. said. Ailes and Murdoch started Fox News 10 years ago and built it into the leading cable-news network, overtaking CNN.

``My gut says, `What, are they kidding?''' said Susan Nathan, senior vice president and director of media at advertising agency Universal McCann in New York.

UA working to up accessibility

Desiree Miller cannot get around campus as easily as most students. She's in a wheelchair, and said sometimes going to class can be difficult - especially when it's an "out of service" day.

"It was a bit shaky first semester," said Miller, a sophomore with an undecided major. "A lot of the elevators weren't working at the beginning of the year."

Though parts of some buildings on campus do not meet the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act, students who use wheelchairs say that, for the most part, they can get around the University campus and navigate their class buildings with relative ease.

"A good thing about being at the University is, if you're registered with disability services, they will move your classes in a classroom so you can be downstairs," said Blake Loftin, a freshman majoring in exercise and sports sciences.

Overcoming Bias: Step 1 To Creating & Sustaining A Cultural ...

"A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy. "It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil;-he represents anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego. The other is good - he represents joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth compassion and faith. This same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?"

The grandfather replied, "The one you feed."

As we live in a racially, ethnically and culturally bias environment that unavoidably re-enforces our fears and intolerances, the task of feeding our children with the right information and resources to help them respect and celebrate people who are different than we are is an understandably daunting task.
