Cutting-edge rehab facility opens in San Antonio

The applause grew louder and louder, occasionally punctuated by whoops and whistles and hoo-ahhs, as the GIs came down the red carpet some in wheelchairs, some limping on crutches and others disfigured.

More than 3,000 family members, friends and celebrities turned out Monday to officially open the Center for the Intrepid, a state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility across from Brooke Army Medical Center.

"Fearless, courageous, brave, strong," master of ceremonies Bill White, president of the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, said of the troops wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. "These men and women are intrepid."

The opening parade launched an emotional two-hour ceremony outside the privately funded, 65,000 square-foot facility.

Presidential hopefuls, high-powered generals, celebrities and millionaire philanthropists rubbed shoulders with enlistees and everyday people to mark the opening of the center, designed to help America's war wounded return to something approaching a normal life.

Commentary: Britain Needs A Declaration Of Independence From America

Intellpuke: In the following commentary, Andrew Rawnsley, an associate editor (politics) at The Observer, a British Sunday newspaper magazine, writes that Tony Blair's successors will have to fashion a foreign policy less obsessed with the U.S. and more concerned with the rest of the world. His column follows:

"This sucks," says the American pilot of an A10 Thunderbolt tank buster when he realizes that he has just unleashed a devastating cannon burst on a British armored patrol. "We're in jail dude," chokes his wingman as they return to base, streaming expletives about their deadly mistake.

Jail is not where these dudes landed after they fatally strafed their British allies in Iraq in a tragic case of blue-on-blue just after the invasion. The senior officer was subsequently promoted to colonel, awarded the bronze star and now trains other American pilots in ground-attack.

Pizarro: Children's theater raises $150000

Children's Musical Theater's Cabaret Night was the kind of evening that leaves people exclaiming, ``What a night! What a crowd!''

And that makes it tough to pick a single highlight from the 16th annual fundraiser, held Saturday night at Villa Ragusa in Campbell:

• The fundraiser was a huge success, selling out in advance for a record crowd of 380 and bringing in more than $150,000. No doubt that figure was helped by some unique live and silent auction items, including trips to see ``Beauty and the Beast'' on Broadway or a VIP dinner with the cast and creators of ``Heroes.'' During the live auction, a bidding war erupted for airfare and invites for four to HBO's post-Emmy Awards party in L.A. in September. The final bid: $20,000.

• There was the news that CMT is just weeks away from hiring a new executive director, meaning artistic director Kevin Hauge will have his third managing partner in just a few months.

Drugs snatched from doorsteps

Residents of Leven Grove have complained to their local pharmacy Geloo Brothers, about leaving prescriptions on doorsteps.

The company, based in Union Street, has told customers it will deliver all medication into people's hands from now on.
