Brothers die within hours of each other

DOUBLE TRAGEDY struck in the Larnaca village of Liopetri, when two brothers suffering from muscular dystrophy died within hours of each other. Soteris Papamichael, aged 22, passed away on Tuesday night due to complications from his condition. His older sibling Charalambos, 26, collapsed yesterday afternoon during his brothers funeral, due to what is believed to be stress that took its toll on his illness. He died a little while later at Famagusta General Hospital. The boys parents, former Liopetri mukhtar Christos and his wife Androulla, were inconsolable after losing their only sons, relatives and friends were in shock over the devastating family tragedy. Both boys were confined to wheelchairs from an early age: Soteris while he was in primary school and Charalambos since he attended the gymnasium.

Stretched surgeons only treating worst cases

Orthopaedic surgeons at Dunedin Hospital say they are being forced to ration treatment to the crippled, immobile and housebound.
THOUSANDS CUT FROM WAITING LISTS - NATS

In the latest Otago District Health Board orthopaedic newsletter to GPs, the surgeons said they had no alternative but to limit their attentions to the worst-affected due to lack of funding and increased demand,

"Currently, we are typically operating on patients who have two crutches, a frame or are in wheelchairs. They are virtually housebound and...will be on maximum medication which may include opiates.

"In addition, they are likely to have serious bone loss on their X-rays. Unless your patient falls into this group it is unlikely that we will be able to perform their surgery within six months," the letter read.

Wheelchair Athletes Can't Get Points in Regionals, States

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association ruled Thursday that athletes in wheelchairs will not be able to earn points for their team in regional and state tournaments.

The decision comes a month after the Howard County school system and the Maryland Disability Law Center representing Tatyana McFadden reached an agreement to allow the Atholton junior to compete and earn points in county events this spring in her wheelchair.
