Never feeling full

Jennifer S. is 34 years old, stands 4' 10" and weighs about 190 pounds. And she cannot stop eating.

But don't blame a lack of discipline or willpower, indifferent parents, her IQ of 51, bulimia, food addiction or gluttony. Blame the insatiable appetite and severe obesity on Prader-Willi Syndrome, or PWS. The brain does not get the message that the body has had enough to eat; that's why the sufferer never feels full.

And that's why the refrigerator and the "goody closet" at her home in New York have been under lock and key for a decade. And why Jennifer is at The Children's Institute in Pittsburgh to learn how to function with a mind that cannot be trusted.

The institute was established in 1902 and, for the last 25 years, has treated more than 1,000 cases of PWS from around the world, including a 400-pound boy barely 5-feet tall who was unable to bath himself.

‘Wheelchairs harm us’

PEOPLE with disabilities get wheelchairs to help them, but they end up acquiring secondary disabilities after using them, writes Flavia Nakagwa.

At the age of 14, I got a wheelchair which was thrice my required wheelchair size. Because of that, I developed pressure sores that took years to heal and a bent back, lamented Fred Semakula, a project co-ordinator in the Ministry of Healths disability section.
Mukasa said many people with disabilities in Uganda had died and others been adversely affected by using unsuitable wheelchairs.

Speaking on Friday during the Wheelchair awareness and planning day at Tal Cottages in Rubaga, Semakula urged the Government to draft a policy and establish professional wheelchair services in Uganda.

Baseball league for disabled kids a 'Miracle' play

DELRAY BEACH — Julia and Jeff Kadel got the idea to start a baseball league for disabled kids after watching a TV program about a national association that oversees "Miracle Leagues" throughout the United States.

After about two years of fund-raising, the newly formed Miracle League of Delray Beach has enough money to start building a playing field. A rubberized field with painted-on bases that can be used by children who use wheelchairs or walkers will be built this summer at Miller Park on Southwest Fourth Avenue. Visually impaired players will use balls that beep so they can find them.

Disabled Sag Activist Sentenced For Possession Of Child Porn

A New York actor who had actively campaigned to pressure the film and TV industry to hire the disabled has been sentenced to 44 months in prison for possession of child pornography. Ed Jupp, 51, a wheelchair-bound victim of cerebral palsy who had appeared in such films as Born on the Fourth of July and A Beautiful Mind as well as Law and Order, NYPD Blue and other TV shows, had pleaded guilty to charges that he had amassed a large collection of child pornography, including hundreds of photographs and 45 videos, on his home computers between 2002 and 2005 and that he had used peer-to-peer programs to share the collection online. In 2003 New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, signing a bill providing a taxi service for New Yorkers who use wheelchairs, singled out Jupp, who had pushed for the legislation.
