Help for the Intrepid

SAN ANTONIO -- The word "sacrifice," like the word "war," lends itself to political and rhetorical excess. There are symbolic sacrifices in metaphorical wars. Then there are genuine sacrifices in real wars.

The latter was on display last week at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, as representatives of a grateful nation dedicated the Center for the Intrepid and two new Fisher Houses to those wounded in the global war on terror.

The center is a 65,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art physical rehabilitation facility. The Fisher Houses are homes away from home for the families of military personnel being treated at military medical ...

Humanitarians, schmanitarians

Being politically correct has become a contact sport, tackling people for not being orthodox humanists. From what I have seen and heard in my university career here at York, I have noticed a paradox involving those who strive for ultimate equality. These humanitarians set social rules and guidelines that sketch out how to act around minorities, both visible and otherwise. I would argue that the guidelines have gotten to a point where they are imploding upon themselves and creating negative loops.    It is common practice to avoid terms that "may" degrade groups of individuals. This list of terms grows longer each day, and it has become impossible to avoid using them on a daily basis. How did these terms become taboo in the first place? Honestly, I cannot tell you, but what I do know is that at some point most of them were scientific-based or were in no way meant derogatorily.

Help for the less fortunate

IN staying true to a tradition that spanned 34 years, the Japan Club of Kuala Lumpur (JCKL) has come forth again in aid of charitable organisations in Malaysia.

Jointly organised with the Japanese Women's Organisation (Cattletya Kai), the annual event is an expression of the Japanese community's gratitude towards the warmth of Malaysians, said JCKL vice-president Sadao Segi.

We want to return the kindness that has been shown to us by the local society in addition to making a difference by improving the quality of life for those who are less fortunate, he said during the Charity Cheque Presentation Ceremony at the JCKL recently.
