| Field hockey springs into action
With spring right around the corner the Greater Victoria Junior Field Hockey League is dusting off the sticks and balls and gearing up for another exciting season. The league, which begins April 16 and runs until June 24, was home to 600 players last season and organizers expect that number to grow thanks to the addition of the new water-based synthetic turf field at UVic. The league operates six divisions up to the under-18 age group. And this year there are plans to add a 'Kind-dies' division for boys and girls aged 5 and 6. Weekly team training is overseen by nationally ranked club coaches, including former national-level players. New-player and parent clinics are also held at the start of the season. Registration for the league goes Feb. 18 from 10 a.m.
Judge tells both sides in dispute to settle it
A federal judge on Monday suggested that Boca Raton and a so-called sober house operator take another 10 days to try to resolve a dispute over a city zoning ordinance that prevents the recovery program from operating in a residential area. U.S. District Judge Donald Middlebrooks' recommendation came after he heard closing arguments in the discrimination case, which began last week. Earlier mediation in the case failed. .
Current Issue:
Within moments of walking on campus, it becomes obvious to most that UC Davis has a lot of students. As one of the largest schools in the University of California system, there are well over 30,000 students enrolled at any one time. Because of this, some facilities, such as the Memorial Union, are in need of renovation. This has led UC officials to develop the Master Plan program. This program, which has been in effect for approximately six months, is allowing the university to take a long look at many of its facilities and evaluate whether they are performing adequately or need to be improved. The entirety of the MU is being examined, most notably the ASUCD Coffee House, the UC Davis Bookstore and several lounge areas. Officials said they hope all of these entities can be combined into one seamless facility.
