Alcohol's effect on fetuses discussed

For years, Laura and Larry Rorem watched their adopted son struggle to get through school, often being humiliated. One teacher pinned his classwork to his shirt and made him wear it around school. Written on the paper with red ink was one big letter, an 'F.'

"She didn't understand he had an FASD," Laura Rorem said.

"If you don't know how to deal with FASD, it can bring out the worst in you," Larry Rorem added.

Last week, about 250 people gathered at Centennial Hall to discuss FASD and issues surrounding it.

The disorder is caused by alcohol, which is toxic to the nervous system. Although adults can process the chemical, fetuses can't. The chemical acts as a poison to the developing nervous system, stunting the entire system to a lesser or greater degree.

Nigeria: 37 years after civil war: Don't leave us to continue ...

ON January 12, 1970, and that is 37 years ago, the bloody civil war between Nigeria and Biafra came to an end. Like in every war situation, there were avoidable deaths and huge losses on both sides.

There are many frustrations when you have a disability. One of the most frustrating things for the Henifords of York is transportation.

Although most of us wouldn't park in a handicapped space, they said many people feel the "grids" or hash-marks beside the handicapped spaces are fair game.

"We can't get the ramp down," said Jack Heniford, the primary driver of their van.

Access rules to apply at sea

The federal government proposed new rules this week that would apply the Americans With Disabilities Act to cruise ships for the first time.

The rules, published in the Federal Register on Jan. 23, ban discriminatory practices by foreign-flagged cruise ships that dock in the United States. Guidelines for the design of ships have yet to be hammered out.

Ted Thompson, a vice president at the International Council of Cruise Lines, said that when they are, the rules will be merged into one document.

"It is difficult to analyze the impact of these regulations until we know more regarding the content of the guidelines," he said.

Nearly every other mode of public transit is already covered by the ADA, which was passed in 1990. But the U.S.
