Wheelchair team is 'like a therapy'

Daniel Moody raced down the court with his sights set on the basket during the Triad Trackers intrasquad basketball game Thursday.

Adam Tarjali, his teammate who was on the opposing practice team, was quickly gaining ground.

Then their wheelchairs clanged together. Moody, strapped into his wheelchair, tipped over.

His teammates yelled, and play stopped for a few seconds. Moody pushed himself and his chair upright. Then he scored a few plays later during the game, which was part of the Trackers' practice.

"I don't get mad at Adam," said Moody, who has been playing for about a year. "Most of the time, I've helped with the tip over. I'm a pretty easygoing guy."

The players on the Trackers are either paralyzed or have trouble walking.

Easton Area sees way out of letting voters into schools

FORKS TWP. | Easton Area School District officials might have found a way out of allowing voting booths in three elementary schools.

They're not going to renew the contract with Northampton County.

While the school board and PTA members have repeatedly voiced concerns over student safety on voting day, county officials have been reluctant to move the polling locations. Board President Richard Siegfried said Wednesday the district will have to vote to approve a four-year contract with Northampton County to allow the voting booths. The vote is on the agenda for the board's Monday meeting.

But Siegfried said he's not sure how the county will proceed if the board doesn't approve the contract. State law allows the county to use school buildings as voting sites, and county Registrar Deb DePaul previously has said the school district must allow voting booths in the schools.

Letter: Definition of SOB brings us to Ameren

When someone is referred to as a SOB, it is not cursing; it is referring to the species of his maternal parent. When someone is referred to a b------ it is not cursing, it is referring to the birth of the person being born out of wedlock. When a person is referred to as someone who has had incestuous relations with his maternal parent, it is not cursing, it is the same relationship entered by Oedipus, King of Thebes, as written by Sophocles. All of which brings us to the Illinois Commerce Commission, Ameren and the Chicago politicians.I will not face hardship because of the electric-rate increase granted to Ameren by the Illinois Commerce Commission. However, my thoughts and concerns are of, and for, the people who are not as fortunate as I.Now, elderly, no, "old" people, handicapped people and some everyday people are going to have to make a choice of food, medicine, heat, rent, warm clothes for their kids etc.

1 eBay sale and artist's clay roosters a hit

Working in her small, sun-drenched studio, a jumble of flowers, stained glass and pieces in progress, Tammy Leigh Brooks of Hickory meticulously builds her feathered creatures out of clay.

She calls them her Rhythm Roosters, and she has reason to be upbeat.

Her luck changed last summer, she says, when she put one of her roosters for sale on eBay. New York-area art dealer Rafael Melendez of Bedminster, N.J., was outbid in the last 15 seconds but called Brooks afterward. He bought not one but five roosters, later driving to North Carolina to pick them up.

Buyers in New York were appreciative, and now Melendez represents Brooks and her work. As a result of the national attention she has already received, Brooks was invited to show at the fourth annual Raw Arts Festival in New York and flew up with two friends for the opening on Jan.
