| West O'ahu Stadium bill would raze Aloha
The declining condition of Aloha Stadium has prompted lawmakers to consider tearing down the 32-year-old facility and replacing it with a new $300 million complex in West O'ahu. The 100-acre Aloha Stadium site in 'Aiea could be sold to help pay for a new stadium. Aloha Stadium, the venue for the NFL Pro Bowl on Saturday, is in need of repair, with rust damage, structural problems, a shortage of toilets and noncompliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act among its shortcomings. "If we don't repair it within seven years, we may have to shut it down for safety reasons," said state comptroller Russ Saito. Razing it might make more sense than spending the roughly $215 million needed to extend its life by 20 or 30 years, said state Rep.

15 years of ADA filled with setbacks, victories
JAN. 26 WAS the 15th anniversary of the day Americans with Disabilities Act went into effect. Since then, a barrage of legal challenges has rendered the ADA much weaker than envisioned. Title I, which prohibits employment discrimination, has especially taken a hit over the years. Employers from both the public and private sectors have frequently challenged the ADA's definition of disability and have narrowed the scope of who qualifies for protection under the law. It is now at the point where people with such conditions as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and significant vision loss have had their cases dismissed because judges determined they don't qualify as disabilities. Employment discrimination suits brought under the ADA are rarely successful in courts. Every year since 1992, the American Bar Association has surveyed Title I cases, and each year, the survey reveals that employers have prevailed in more than 90 percent of the decisions.
Possible Tornado Causes Damage
Although the man was not seriously injured, he told rescuers he had gone into the water to try to help a woman he had seen struggling in the water. Cox said the department launched boats and deployed searchers along the creek down to its confluence with the Colorado River, but they saw no sign of the woman. Cox said he believes the woman may have been able to escape the creek, and he disputed claims that the woman was presumed dead. He said the department had helped close down dozens of roads throughout town and was assisting in many minor rescues. An ice storm warning was in effect until Monday morning for much of North Texas, including Dallas and Fort Worth, where residents braced for a slick mixture of sleet, freezing rain and snow. About 300 flights had been canceled so far Saturday at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, spokesman David Magana said.

Editors note: this is part of a series of features being published over the next few weeks on the various sports which make up the 2007 Canada Winter Games. Spectators coming out to watch the wheelchair basketball during the 2007 Canada Winter Games are likely going to find their jaws are going to drop, says Corey Smith, a member of Team Ontario. You can bounce (in the wheelchair) and move up and down the court without touching the wheels, says Smith. Youll be watching it and youre kind of going to go Howd they do that? Before they kind of judge it and think its going to be boring, they should come out and see it, he says. People love to watch it when they give it a chance. Theyre not going to see these sad people confined to wheelchairs shooting at some five foot net, agrees Ramesh Ferris, president of the Yukon Society Towards Accessible Recreation and Sport (Yukon STARS).
