Courthouse survives post-holiday rush
The extraordinary overcrowding and security issues Santa Rosa County Courthouse officials feared might arise on Tuesday did not.There were problems, to be sure, such as shackled inmates mingling with the general public. But the issues didn't vary wildly from a typical day at the courthouse.County officials have said the historic building is too small, unsafe and doesn't comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.Circuit Court Judge Ron Swanson had called for an emergency meeting last week after discovering that more than 1,000 people, including adult and juvenile inmates, could crowd the courthouse.The courthouse always is busy, but especially so after long holiday weekends. The courthouse was closed Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.Barely half of the 350 people who received jury summonses reported for duty Tuesday, diminishing the possible crowd."(The situation) was still bad, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been," Swanson said.Still, court officials prepared for the worst-case scenario, drawing additional security from the Santa Rosa Sheriff's Office and Milton Police Department.As many as 12 officers were on hand at the courthouse entrance where two normally stand."Never will you see this many deputies at the front door.
